We Ain’t Buying It: Why Black Dollars Matter Now More Than Ever

We Ain’t Buying It, Your Wallet, Your power billboard

Every Tuesday night on Nightcap Knowledge, we sit down with a simple mission: inform, entertain, energize, and empower our people.

This show, we tapped into a conversation that goes far beyond trending hashtags and holiday shopping habits. We talked about the “We Ain’t Buying It” movement — a nationwide effort encouraging folks to withhold spending with major corporations during Thanksgiving weekend. And before anybody says it: no, this isn’t about guilt, fear, or pressure.

It’s about power. Our power. The kind we’ve had for generations, but haven’t always been taught to leverage.

Black Spending Power Is Real — But Where Does It Go?

Every year, Black households collectively spend over $1.7 trillion. That’s trillion with a “T.”

Yet less than 2% of that circulates through Black-owned businesses.

That’s not because we don’t have businesses worth supporting — Mississippi alone has thousands of Black-owned entrepreneurs, creators, restaurants, tech innovators, professional services, and retail shops. It’s because the system isn’t designed to direct us toward ourselves.

That’s exactly why MS Black Pages exists. To make supporting Black businesses simple, intentional, and consistent.

Holiday boycotts come and go, but economic strategy lasts.

So What Is “We Ain’t Buying It” Really About?

Despite the headlines, this campaign isn’t just about shopping — it’s about awareness.

  • Awareness of where our dollars go

  • Awareness of which companies benefit from our culture while ignoring our concerns

  • Awareness of how intentional spending (or withholding) can shift markets

  • Awareness of the businesses in our communities that need our support year-round

Boycotts are not the whole solution. But they are a statement — and a reminder that our dollars are not passive. They act. They speak. They influence.

What Should We Do Instead?

Here’s the beauty of it: You don’t have to stop buying anything — you just shift where you buy.

Buy local. Buy Black. Buy with intention.

Whether it’s holiday gifts, everyday essentials, professional services, or food, there’s a Black-owned option somewhere near you.

This week’s episode broke down:

  • The economic power of Black communities

  • How to redirect spending with purpose

  • The role of corporate America in today’s climate

  • The importance of building and protecting Black-owned ecosystems

  • Why is intentional consumerism bigger than a boycott

  • Practical strategies your family can start using today

Nightcap Knowledge isn’t just a show — it’s a collection of informed, empowered, community-focused conversations.

Supporting Black Businesses Isn’t A Trend — It’s A Legacy

Our ancestors survived without Walmart.Without Amazon.Without Target. They survived because they had each other.

Let’s rebuild some of that spirit — not for nostalgia’s sake, but for our economic survival and growth.

This season, whether you join the boycott or not, I challenge you to do one thing:

Make at least one purchase from a Black-owned business every week.

It’s small. It’s impactful. It keeps our communities alive.

And Mississippi Black Pages is here to help you make it happen.
